Diversity Spotlight Thursday (#6)

diversity-spotlight

It is more important than ever to read and support diverse books. This week has been a shocking revelation of the progress we still need to make, especially if you live in a red state in the US. I am female, a person of color and a Muslim and I know this is awful. But we will get through this. Stay strong and stay safe!

Diversity Spotlight Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by the wonderful Aimal @ Bookshelves and Paperbacks. Every week, you come up with one book in each of three different categories: a diverse book you have read and enjoyed, a diverse book on your TBR, and one that has not yet been released. Also you should check out her wonderful post Thoughts: The 2016 Election, The Results, The Meaning of Kindness which sums up everything I’m feeling but cannot express into words.

A BOOK I HAVE READ

22521951“Everything Everything” by Nicola Yoon

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Everything Everything is a very cute love story. The main character is multiracial and has an illness. It was not the typical YA romance since Maddy is not allowed physical contact but her and Olly’s interactions were absolutely adorable.

A BOOK ON MY TBR

22521951“As I Descended” by Robin Talley

Maria Lyon and Lily Boiten are their school’s ultimate power couple—even if no one knows it but them.

Only one thing stands between them and their perfect future: campus superstar Delilah Dufrey.

Golden child Delilah is a legend at the exclusive Acheron Academy, and the presumptive winner of the distinguished Cawdor Kingsley Prize. She runs the school, and if she chose, she could blow up Maria and Lily’s whole world with a pointed look, or a carefully placed word.

But what Delilah doesn’t know is that Lily and Maria are willing to do anything—absolutely anything—to make their dreams come true. And the first step is unseating Delilah for the Kingsley Prize. The full scholarship, awarded to Maria, will lock in her attendance at Stanford―and four more years in a shared dorm room with Lily.

Maria and Lily will stop at nothing to ensure their victory—including harnessing the dark power long rumored to be present on the former plantation that houses their school.

But when feuds turn to fatalities, and madness begins to blur the distinction between what’s real and what is imagined, the girls must decide where they draw the line.

From acclaimed author Robin Talley comes a Shakespeare-inspired story of revenge and redemption, where fair is foul, and foul is fair.

I love Robin Talley’s Lies We Tell Ourselves so I’m super excited to read this one!

A BOOK RELEASING SOON

22521951“The Love Interest” by Cale Dietrich

There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.

Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?

Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.

What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.

Release Date: May 16, 2017 | Goodreads Link

I haven’t read a good spy book in ages! I hope this lives up to expectations.

  1. I’ve read Everything Everything and quite liked it! And I can’t wait to find time to read As I Descended. That was one of my highly anticipated reads this year but haven’t had a chance to get around to it. Not to mention, this reading slump I’ve been in for a couple months. Ugh.

    1. “Everything Everything” was so cute and just what I needed after a long week. I just got “As I Descended” from the library and I’m very excited to read it! I hope my expectations aren’t too high. I just got out off a huge reading slump myself, good luck to you for yours!

  2. I honestly cannot believe I still haven’t picked up Everything, Everything – especially since her newest book just hit the shelves and has been getting rave reviews! I need to get to it ASAP. The Love Interest sounds like such a fun book that bends overdone tropes. It’s definitely a highly anticipated release. 😀

    1. “Everything Everything” was adorable! Her new book, “Sun is Also a Star” was even better and earned its place in my favorites list. I think you’ll like both books, I hope you get to read them soon. I know! I love spy related books even if the premise seems overdone because spies are just cool 😀 I can’t wait to read it!
