Hello people! Hope you’re doing well and not currently going through a book hangover. I decided to do a life update post. This week, I will be graduating from high school. Wow. I guess it hasn’t really hit me yet.
Pros: I will probably be reading a lot more this coming month. Yay summer! And yay for being an introvert who doesn’t do much of anything else!
Cons: I’m a little terrified. Granted going to college/university isn’t really stepping into the real world but it’s much closer to the real world than high school is. And to me, the real world looks terrifying.
And with college also comes the need for me to get a job. I’ve never had an actual paying job before (does volunteering at the library and hiding whenever it seems like someone might come ask me a question count?). How does one even get a job? Do I actually have to go out and talk to people?
So, anyone else graduating this year? Any tips to surviving life after high school?

I’m almost done with my first year of college and I’ve never actually had a paying job either… so this summer I’m going to work hard and get one. The best advice I can give to surviving college (as a fellow introvert who likes to hide in the stacks) is to put yourself out there and try new things. It was incredibly hard for me to put myself out there and make new friends, but I’ve been forcing myself to all year and it’s really nice to look back and be proud of myself for stretching and growing in that area. And as scary as the real world is, now I’m not as terrified as I was and I’m actually looking forward to the real world, now 🙂

Thank you for the wonderful advice! Putting myself out there does seem like a scary concept and I don’t have much experience with it. I will try my best though. I’m glad everything worked out well for you. Good luck with finding a job. Here’s to hoping for the best! I hope you have a good summer too!

Hey, there! Well, I’m just going to assume you live in the US, b/c I’m not sure where you live, but I live in Québec and here we have what we call ”CEGEP.” It’s a two-years establishment that kinda transitions you from high school to univerity and I’m loving it. It’s a step higher than high school but it’s not as serious as university. I thought it would be scary (since it’s an hour and a quarter from my house and I have to take the bus + metro) but it turns out it’s pretty easy, so now I’m extremely excited for university. I worked for 10 months in a clothing store, so I have enough money for a year of uni, but I’ll also find another one next summer. Have you decided your program yet? I mean, you must have, right? And getting a job is all about being motivated! You can either go in person or send an e-mail, but I do recommend going in person to give your resume. At least, that’s what we do here.

Thank you for your advice! I do live in the US, I probably should have mentioned that. That sounds like a good program to transition you to University, I’m now wishing we had something of that sort. By program, do you mean major? I had my mind set on studying computer science but I don’t know if it’ll change once I get there. You’re right, going in person for a job is probably a better idea, but I just know my mind will stop working midway through a sentence. 😦 I guess I’ll have to start somewhere though. Thanks again!

I graduate next year, so there isn’t too much that I can really say. But I do want to say congratulations! Enjoy all that reading time which you have earned, and I also hope you will like the university life and be able to get a job easily 🙂
